A standard residential sliding glass door panel weighs 80-150 pounds. A hurricane impact sliding door panel of the same size weighs 150-300+ pounds because the glass consists of two panes bonded to an interlayer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). This laminated construction prevents the glass from shattering into the home during a hurricane, but it also means every hardware component must be rated for significantly higher loads.
Rollers on impact doors must carry more weight, tracks must resist greater downward force, and lock mechanisms must secure a heavier panel against wind pressure that can exceed 60 pounds per square foot in the Treasure Coast's wind zone. Installing standard residential rollers on an impact door leads to premature failure - often within months - and may void the door's product approval.
The Florida Building Code classifies the Treasure Coast in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) for areas in the coastal construction zone and as Wind-Borne Debris Region for the remaining areas. Impact-rated products installed in these zones must have a valid Notice of Acceptance (NOA) from Miami-Dade County or a product approval from the Florida Building Commission.
When we repair an impact sliding door, we use replacement parts that maintain the door's original product approval. This is not just a quality issue - it is a code compliance issue. Using non-approved replacement parts on an impact door can result in failed building inspections, voided wind mitigation credits, and denied insurance claims after a storm event.
Heavy-duty roller replacement. Impact door rollers are rated by weight capacity. We install rollers specifically rated for the panel weight of your door. A 250-lb impact panel requires rollers rated for at least 300 lbs to provide adequate margin. Using undersized rollers causes rapid failure and potential panel drop.
Impact-rated lock and handle service. Impact door locks must engage at multiple points to resist wind pressure evenly across the door. Multi-point locking systems with hooks at the top and bottom plus a main latch in the center are standard on impact doors. We repair and replace these specialized lock systems with approved replacement parts.
Weatherstripping for impact doors. Impact door weatherstripping serves a dual purpose: air and water infiltration prevention during normal weather, and pressure equalization during hurricane conditions. The weatherstripping must be properly installed and intact to maintain the door's wind pressure rating.
Glass replacement. Cracked or damaged impact glass must be replaced with glass that matches the original product's specifications: glass thickness, interlayer type and thickness, and overall unit construction. We coordinate with certified impact glass suppliers to ensure replacement panels carry valid product approvals.
